Epstein found a number of folks who lived in a black community up on West 99th Street that was cleared by Moses’ Manhattantown project:
“In 2007, Epstein started digging through the archives and interviewing residents to learn more about the neighborhood that had vanished. From this work, he created a 7-minute documentary portrait of the old community…”
In 1999, Michael Levine (co-host of the 2010 Jane’s Walk Phoenix) purchased “a few” signs from the Arizona State surplus yard. 12 years later he has put them to work.
Jane Jacobs talks about her book “The Nature of Economies.” In it, she asserts that economies are governed by the same rules as nature itself. (Originally aired April 2000).
From CBC TV’s “The Way It Is” program, circa 1969, urbanist and author Jane Jacobs compares late 1960s Toronto and Montreal on how they have been planned and built, while condemning major highways planned for GTO.
Bob Dylan and jane Jacobs both lived in Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Indeed, this is where Jane got many of her ideas of how a city should work, including here famous aphorism ”Eyes on the Street’.”
While this video focused on Dylan’s haunts in the Village, it isn’t hard to imagine Jane hanging out and many of them as well. For example, Both Jane and Bob were known to frequent the White Horse Tavern. Who knows, maybe they shared a drink or two.
New York City honored Jane Jacobs by naming Hudson Street Jane Jacobs way. Jane fought to preserve neighborhoods and communities, Save Coney Island paid a visit to the ceremony to remind the city what Jane Jacobs stood for.
You can read more about the street (and the controversy) here.
My friend, Nick Bastien, who participated in last years Walk, wrote this great post on this year’s Jane’s Walk, complete with a short video interview. Enjoy, and be sure to check out the original at RailLife.com
Jane’s Walk is back in Phoenix for a second annual stroll through the city. This year, the walk will focus on the Warehouse District just south of downtown and we’ll be learning a lot of cool things about the history of these buildings, the area, and what might be next for this part of town. I personally think the warehouse district has a TON of potential for some great things and am excited to learn more from Yuri about the neighborhood. This past week, I caught up with Yuri to talk about Jane’s Walk. Check out this video, straight from the horse’s mouth!
I can tell ya’ that we had a lot of fun at last year’s Jane’s Walk and I know this one will be pretty darn cool, as well.
Below, you will find a map of the area we will be covering on Saturday. Depending on which direction you are traveling from, there are a couple of different light rail stations for you to use. From the north or west, use Central/1st Ave or Jefferson/3rd St. From the east, exit Washington/3rd and head south a few blocks. Yeah, I guess you could drive, but what’s the fun in that?
